About PANN

The most fun LGBTQIA+ event in the Netherlands!

PANN is a Utrecht-based LGBTQIA+ organisation, founded in 1969, with the aim of contributing to the emancipation of LGBTQIA+ people and LGBTQIA+ young people in particular. PANN therefore organises monthly parties and social events to let young people with connect with each other in a social and accessible way.

History

Founding

PANN was founded in 1969 by six students from Utrecht who were fed up that there was no space in their city for LGBTQIA+ youth. The students decided to change this.

At the time, Article 248-bis of the Penal Code criminalised homosexual relations between adults. For this reason, the COC did not allow visitors under 21 years of age. The students decided to change this. Despite the section of the law, the public prosecutor had no objection to holding a Tuesday night social for gay youths.

This gave birth to the first PANN event on 15 April 1969.

Fight for emancipation

Especially in the 1960s and 1970s, PANN actively campaigned for gay emancipation and regularly organised protest actions, such as group marriages on the steps of the Utrecht city hall.

In the 1980s and 1990s, PANN decided to turn radical campaigning into providing grants.

After 2000, PANN increasingly developed as a professional organisation. Besides providing grants, it also picked up its own social projects.
